Baby Car Seat Cover tutorial

I woke up on one of  "those" days...only a few short days into October and we got snow! Well what better thing to do than to sew while I'm stuck inside staying warm?!

Ok so it wasn't alot of snow i think this was just preparing us for how bad the winter is really going to be.
So how would you like to sew a car seat cover? with soft minky fabric on one side?!  Yay these are so fun and quick to make, I've probably made and sold at least 50 of these NO JOKE!
The one above is one i made for a client....i love the fabric! and you can't go wrong with light blue minky :)

Ok lets get started here are the supplies you'll need :
  • 1 1/4 yard cotton fabric
  • 1 1/4 yard minky (or you can use cotton)
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Fake flowers
  • Velcro
  • Sewing Machine

 Here's my fabric choice
First lay your minky fabric right side up and your cotton fabric on top of it right side down.
Then you'll cut it 35" by 42" (i made myself a huge pattern out of newspapers for this step because i wanted it to be exact.)
Cut the straps 4" by 9 1/2" laying your fabric the same as you did for the made piece minky right side up cotton right side down on top of the minky.
I like to round my edges so i just used a bowl from my cupboard to round out all 4 edges
Ta-da! rounded edges that was easy right? next start pinning and don't be afraid to use lots of pins i find this helps especially when sewing minky because it is prone to stretch when you sew it.

While pinning i put 2 pins going the opposite of all the rest to remind me to Leave an opening to turn it.

sorry this picture is sideways but next you will sew the main part of the cover leaving an opening at the top to turn it right side out. **also i find it very helpful to sew with the minky on the bottom**

So after you sew it -turn it right side out through the opening you left, and iron all around the edges...
Pin the opening (where you turned it right side out) and then top stitch around the whole thing.
Moving on to the straps, i rounded the corners on them using a cup (but you don't have too) then i sewed them just like the cover and then turned them right side out, ironed and top stitched all the way around to give it a finished look.
Next the placement of the straps on the cover i actually use THIS really great illustration and alter a couple inches if needed.
Since i decided i was going to be putting flowers on the straps, i like to make them removable for washing purposes, so i just hot glued a piece of Velcro to the top part of the straps
And hot glued the other part of the Velcro to the flowers
 Pretty and removable ;)
So there you go my version of a car seat cover! and it only took me and hour to make!
